Children’s Mental Health week – how the remedies can help your children.

Children tend to have two aspects of play – active and passive and babies and your children are mostly involved in active play where as the older child will look more towards the passive phase.

Environmental factors will also play a huge part in a child’s development – if parents are active and outgoing and enjoy walking and outdoor sports the children will invariably follow – if parents are happy to watch television and read or listen to music again children will take that lead.

Lockdown sadly although 5 years ago had a detrimental effect on many children, sadly as time goes by we tend to forget the effects of such a difficult time.

Apart from the fact that our lives are were turned upside down, our children were taken away from their friends, they were pulled from pillar to post between lockdowns, friendships were taken away – exams were cancelled and schools were changed all in a state of a pandemic.

I have been working with children for the last 5 years who are dealing with a numerous situations and have put together a list of suggested remedies that could help your little people

Where do we start?

Your children will often tell you either subtly or loudly how they feel, they find a way to express their emotions, as adults we just need to be aware of how they are feeling.

Sometimes the developmental stages of play can also tell us a lot about how child is feeling and what they are feeling but unable to express.  A really good way to see this is often through drawing or painting as well as by behaviour.

I have listed below some remedies which are often very useful in helping a child to manage their emotions when they do not have the vocabulary to explain precisely how they feel.

Suggested remedies

Agrimony is a very well used remedy for your children who hide their anxieties and fears and who may only show them in drawing.  They are often withdrawn.

Centaury children are typically timid and find it hard to stand up for themselves, they often become dominated by the strength of others.

If your child has experienced unpleasant things like the death of a family member or witnessed something violent then I would use Honeysuckle to help release the sad and unpleasant memories and also use Star of Bethlehem to help with the release of the trauma and ease the shock and sorrow.

A common trait of children is to constantly ask for approval from a peer or Mum or Dad and to need reassurance – in this situation I would use the remedy Cerato – to give the child the confidence to make their own decisions and have faith in his own mind.  https://www.bachcentre.com/en/remedies/the-38-remedies/cerato/

For the little person who is undecided about any given choice and spends time pondering on what to choose then maybe Scleranthus would help to make him more decisive.

Wild Rose is a good one to help with a child who lacks enthusiasm for anything, and Hornbeam is good if weariness if a tendency.

Gentian is good to help with focus and to help the little one to finish a puzzle or draw a picture and finish it.

Where attention span is a problem and frustration tends to develop easily then welcome to Impatiens this remedy is there to create patience and allow them to slow down.  Clematis on the other hand encourages those who become board easily and tend to daydream.
