Can natural remedies help with ADHD?

Clients often ask, “Can natural remedies help with ADHD?” The answer, from me, is a resounding yes! But if you’d prefer to hear it from somebody else, this is what the parent of a nine-year-old boy I have been treating with Bach Flower Remedies said; “My husband and I have noticed that our son is showing so many signs of improvement; there are elements of his behaviour that we haven’t seen for at least 3 years!”

The young boy has been taking the remedies for the last four months. In the last four weeks, he has played more with his sister without arguing and has been going to bed at a normal time instead of sleeping on the sofa. He has also been engaging with home education and enjoying Occupational Therapy activities.

Can natural remedies help with ADHD?

Yes! Bach Flower remedies can help with ADHD and other neurodiverse situations – in children.

Over the past years, a lot more attention has been focused on our children experiencing the symptoms of ADHD and other neurodiverse situations. I have been working with at least a dozen children and their families to help them find space for relaxation, all with the help of the Bach Flower Remedies.

Neurodiversity comes in many forms, and most of my experience has come through working with children experiencing ADHD, Autism and Sensory problems; the resulting impact of these problems is very often frustration and irritation both with themselves and others.

There can be some emotional outbursts or a complete shutdown; episodes of rage and irrational behaviour can occur; and sometimes, anger or aggression can be shown towards a sibling or parent.

Equally, it can just be a case of noise and tears that the child needs to let out to vent to the world regardless of where they are.  There is no rhyme or reason for what can occur or where.  It can, in many cases, be difficult to find the trigger points.

What remedies can help these situations?

Star of Bethlehem and Impatiens:

When treating children and young people with ADHD or another neurodiversity, there is often a common thread of a traumatic situation either during birth or pregnancy. In these cases, the Star of Bethlehem remedy has helped these children. They have become more relaxed in their attitude and behaviour. Where they display an element of impatience and frustration, we can use Impatiens – which helps to provide a

sense of calm and quiet.

 Elm:

We can use Elm to try to keep triggering situations under control, which helps to ease overwhelm in times of crisis.

 Cherry Plum:

Cherry Plum is another remedy that can help control emotions, calming irrational thoughts and actions.

Gorse and Pine:

After an outburst, children often feel deep sadness and sometimes guilt for lashing out; in these cases, we will use Gorse for deep despair and then the Pine for guilt.

The Results

I have seen my clients' children become quieter and calmer. The remedies do not solve all the problems but have helped ease the situation.

They have told me that their children are more relaxed and less stressed. Some have moved seamlessly from Junior to Senior School, and yes, there may be a little meltdown, but not daily.

I also advocate the use of Rescue Remedy products. The pastilles can help with a spur-of-the-moment outburst, while the Children’s Rescue and Night Remedy can help with sleep.
