Bach Flower remedies and children

Children’s mental health is very hot topic especially since lockdown and I know from a lot of my clients that there are huge waiting lists for the mental health teams that are available.

Our young people have been through some traumatic times, and this has been highlighted more so in recent months and I have been working with many them over the past few months with the beautiful range of Glycerine based remedies.  These are perfect for our little ones.

Children experience emotions in the same way as we do – the biggest difference is that they are unable to express themselves in the way an adult can.  They have very limited vocabulary and normally in three ranges – happy they laugh, sad or angry they cry or shout, normal – they are just calm.

There are one or two things that have happened over the last two years that have been totally alien to normal mammal life.

  1. We were asked to all live together and share the same space for many hours during lockdown – this is not normal for any human being or any animal for that matter and it proved a huge strain on everyone. Equally some families had to learn to live without other key family members
  2. Because we were all in the same space our children heard a lot of adult conversations during their day and not all of this was positive for them – they will have taken all of this in as they are like sponges and learn from all they hear.
  3. Quick tip- never assume that because your child is “in bed” that they are asleep and cannot hear – they can hear everything!!! They are very much not deaf and will be acutely aware of all that is being said or going on

A child is born, almost as a blank sheet of paper, with no emotional baggage, however this can depend also on some external factors, – did you have a traumatic pregnancy and also was your baby a C section child – Trauma in pregnancy and at birth can leave an emotional scar on your little person.

In these situations, my recommendation if your child is showing signs of trauma to look at the remedy Star of Bethlehem – the beautiful remedy which eases past shock or trauma away and will neutralise adrenalin in its path – thus returning your little one to a calm and gentle state.

Some children show signs of fear and can be quite timid and shy and very often this can come from trauma or simply be an inherited character.  I have to say some of the most beautiful adults I have met are quiet and comparatively shy so its not a bad trait to have but at school and in social surroundings it can cause them problems, in order to help alleviate these characteristics we can look at Mimulus for fear of the known, Aspen for fear of the unknown or even Rock Rose for terror – we can also look at Larch to give them courage and allow them to step out of their shells.  These are all brilliant remedies to help your shy little one.  Life will feel a lot more comfortable.

There are then the children who are the polar opposite, loud, brash and possibly quite angry – here we sometimes need to look at the underlying reasons because Anger is not something a child is born with and can often come from frustration – in this case we could look at Impatiens for frustration and impatiens, we could also look at Holly for jealousy – this is especially useful for sibling rivalry, you could look at Cherry plum to help them control their emotions.  Another good one for the boisterous child who is a real enthusiast is Vervain – to just gently allow them to lead but not take over.

For the little person who struggles with separation anxiety from Mum or Dad there are some other remedies that are useful, Red Chestnut – for fear and over concern for others – the child may have reason to be really worried about a parent or grandparent – they may have experienced a loss and then fear the loss of everyone else.  Walnut is useful to enable them to accept and grow with changes in their lives.  Elm is also a good one helping them managing the overwhelm of new emotions and circumstances.

If you have a child who is very low and despondent – Gorse is a wonderful remedy for this – to lighten the load – some children a incredibly emotionally vulnerable and they bear the load of everything and everyone around them.  Gorse can help ease the load.  Mustard is also there for easing the low moods that they cannot describe.  Agrimony is a magical remedy to allow our children to open up – to help them articulate their feelings.  If you have a child who doesn’t speak easily then this is the remedy for them.

I could write much more but if you are interested in learning more about the remedies and how they can help your children please call me and let’s have a chat to see how they can help you and your family. www.remediesbyros.com or 07739775783.
