Overwhelm – how do you manage it? Can you get through?
Just imagine feeling that you can do anything you want, you can conquer the world, nothing will ever get you down. You can rise above it all. It’s a beautiful feeling and if you can put the overwhelm out of your life it is all possible.
What does Overwhelm feel like?
The problem is that you have to get deal with the overwhelm and sometimes when we are so far in we cannot get out of it. Being overwhelmed can creep up on us. However, when you are in there it is all consuming, and then there also comes a feeling of low mood and loss of confidence. These feelings are usually new to the sufferer.
What can cause overwhelm?
Overwhelm arises from a huge variety of situations but right now I am thinking about the families who are working, and their children are just finishing school for a very long holiday! Juggling the work life, the children and where they will go, yes some have school clubs – but they cost money and aren’t always affordable, juggling children of different age groups and different needs. There is also the situation of problems at work when everyone goes on holiday there is always extra work to do as well. All of this is a prime situation of things that become overwhelming.
Simply managing this process is enough to terrify most of us, then throw in a splash of neurodivergence, a touch of perimenopause, and menopause and a dose of adolescence as well and the whole situation can be so totally completely consuming.
Most mums dealing with this are suffering overwhelm but don’t even appreciate it. They are permanently exhausted, often feeling a bit scratchy and irritable, desperate to be able to stop but can’t allow themselves the time, and also feeling really low and lacking in confidence as they feel as if they have failed!!!
What Bach Flower remedies can help and why?
We can use the Elm remedy and the essence can help you to step back and regain my sense of equilibrium. It is really important to also regain your self-confidence and realise that you can still cope and manage with all around you.
At the same time, you can start also with some breathing exercises, very quietly in the morning and last thing at night.
I would also suggest writing lists – but it is crucial that the list is short – there maybe a longer list somewhere else but take off manageable pieces each day – this will avoid the spiral into the overwhelm pit again.
During this time, you will quietly find a sense of balance and start to appreciate just what you can or cannot do – learn to delegate too. You then also need to learn to take time to rest and restore your energy levels.
If in the middle of this the dreaded perimenopause/menopause is coming to a head then we can still apply the same as above but also look to seeking medical advise wherever possible to start with.
Do some research into your symptoms, maybe get some additional advice but wherever you can the most important thing to do is to get some help and don’t leave it. You are the important thing in this series of situations, so you have a duty to look after you.

How will I feel afterwards
The Elm remedy will create a sense of total calm, and an ability to manage and overcome.
The remedy will help the mind to become calmer so that the problems can be put into perspective and thought about clearly, rationally and methodically, this can also help to build confidence. When your confidence starts to come back you will feel like tackling the world again.
Although this time with some caveats. Give yourself time to rest, learn to say no, step back from time to time and see where things are, write a small list for each day and tackle it with method- slowly and in your time. Importantly learn to delegate so others can help.
