What is a Bach Flower Remedy – how do they work?

What is a Bach Flower Remedy?  How can they help?

Many people have heard of Rescue Remedy, the little yellow box and bottle that can be found on the shelf in most high street health shops and supermarkets.  This remedy is a Bach Flower Remedy and has helped 100’s of people through the years to get through driving tests, exams, visits to dentists and other traumatic situations.

Well, the story doesn’t end there.  What is a Bach Flower Remedy and how can they help you?  Here is the story

Where do they come from?

Dr Edward Bach discovered and brought us 38 remedies, each for a specific emotional and mental state plus a combination of 5 remedies which is designed for the emotional and difficult situations in the moment.

All but one of the remedies is based on single flowers and tree blossom, the odd one out is Rock Water, which is made from the water of a natural sprint with healing properties!

Who was this wonderful man – Dr Edward Bach

He was a practicing GP born in 1886 who decided that he wanted to look at natural medicine and to work with the emotional and mental health of his patients.  In summary in the last 6 years of his life he put together the 38 wonderful remedies and wrote several books about them too.

He worked with Homeopathic medicines and vaccines and a lot of what he did then is still used to this day.  He passed away in 1936 peacefully in his sleep at his cottage Mount Vernon, in Wallingford, Oxfordshire.

Dr Bach realised that there were 7 very distinct groups of people emotionally, and these 7 groups of people react to illness in very distinct ways, he then went on to find an develop the flower remedies with a system that he tried with his patients.  This work was done without a fee and the various flowers showed their worth and how they helped.

“The remedies have transformed my life in so many ways” EN

Which flowers did he use and how do they work?

He started with the flower Mimulus which is for fear of the known, so fears such as fear of the dark, heights, spiders, illness etc anything you can name and this proved very successful.  He then also looked at Impatiens and this remedy is helping ease impatience and frustration both with oneself and others.  These two remedies showed immediate successful results, so he then went on working through the emotional states till he completed the 38.   He used flowers from trees and wild plants, Oak, Beech, Clematis, Agrimony, Wild Rose and many more.

The remedies work because they treat the patient not the disease or the symptoms.  They work with the emotions and how they are feeling emotionally, the basis is to turn the negative energy and thoughts to positive ones.

Do they have a placebo effect?

No more than other medicines, they work on both children and animals and my first encounter with the remedies was with a horse.  I watch our pony change in behaviour over a period of 5 weeks and the fear and anxiety that he had held for 20 years completely disappeared.

This to me proved that there was no placebo effect for these beautiful remedies, I have since worked with many other animals and children also who have benefitted hugely from these remedies.

“Ros was a lifeline for me at a very difficult time. I am now through that difficult time, but I still have some rescue remedies to hand.”  (  KB )

Are the Bach Flower Remedies safe for everyone?

There are no known side-effects to using the remedies. They are generally preserved in alcohol though, so for people who need to avoid it, an alternative glycerine based can be provided. These remedies are prescribed for children and for pets. Sometimes, I’ve treated several members of the same family, using different remedies for each. An example of this was a teen suffering with exam anxiety, which then affected her mum’s anxiety levels too and they were triggering each other. By treating them both simultaneously, the result was a stronger relationship and a calmer, more harmonious home life.

What can Bach Flower remedies help with?

The remedies can help alleviate the emotions regarding, fear – of all types, loneliness, isolation, anxiety, bereavement, PTSD, Long Covid, deep seated trauma, menopause and many many more, the aim literally being to turn the negative to a positive.

“I was in a dark place I didn’t think I could get out of and they really did work…Being on antidepressants for years, I never thought I would be able to live without them, however, the remedies made this possible and I’m living a happy, healthy life with no tablets.” ( SC )

Over the last 20 years, I have used the remedies for myself, my family members and my pets, with great results, as well as prescribing for hundreds of clients who have felt a positive difference after taking them.  Knowing that the remedies are natural too, they are a great form of alternative or complementary treatment for people of all ages.
